We need a house sitter

South West - Devon

Gillian

We live in a rural area of mid Devon. The house sits in a valley surrounded by farmland, with one close neighbour. There is a small country lane which passes the house and a stream runs through the floor of the valley. We love the peace and quiet and being able to enjoy the garden and listen to the birds. Our house is an old, 4 bed detached property with low beams and wood burners. It is in the style of a Devon longhouse, with a recent extension of a modern green oak vaulted room with fabulous views onto the garden and the hill side beyond. The garden is large and hilly in places, accessed by several steps. Because of this, our house isn't really suitable for people with mobility issues and inside the floors are a little uneven in places due to the age of the house. The only gardening required might be some watering in the greenhouse.
We have a lovely cat called Tahini, he is a neutered tabby, and will be just over a year old this summer. Like most cats he spends large parts of his day asleep but as he is so young there are times in the day, mornings and evenings in particular where he really appreciates company. He is very friendly although finds small children worrying and usually disappears when our 3yr old grandson visits. He is used to being fed twice a day. He has the run of the place via a microchipped cat flap.
We also have 2 older horses living in the stables on the opposite side of the road. These are Belle, an ex race horse and Rosa a smaller companion pony for Belle. They live a quiet life and are no longer used for riding. They have free access to their field and large joint stable area. For horses, they require fairly minimal care. They are fed twice a day and need their stable poo picked at the same time as feeding. They are both very happy older ladies and are well behaved, especially when eating! Like all large animals care needs to be taken around them especially with young children although Belle and Rosa are used to our grandson's attention.
The closest village is roughly a mile and a half away and it has a lovely country pub, a small community shop and Doctors surgery. There is a very limited bus service to the village and so the easiest mode of transport is a car. The next largest town is Crediton and is 5 miles away. This has all the usual services of supermarkets, pubs, shops, cafes and there is also a railway station. Exeter is approximately 15 miles away, about 45 minutes in the car with all that you might expect from a city. The North coast is approximately an hour and twenty minutes by car depending on where you are heading for. The south coast is just over an hours drive. Dartmoor can be reached in about the same.
