The Spectacled Bear

56,

Back in 2019, I left my floating home, my community, my partner, my business, my geese, ducks, and swans, to care for my mother for a few months after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I anticipated mother residing safely in a care home and me being back on the river by the spring with life returning to normal.

But then, of course, the pandemic happened.
Four years later, everyone is gone and everything has changed.

I'm currently in a transition period, having finally sold the house, paid all the care fees, and laid everything to rest. I'm now making a plan for what might come next. I'm in no particular hurry as I need a bit of time to process what's just happened over the last few years and heal a while before I begin my next project.

I've always travelled extensively and will do so again shortly. I've been part of a number of travel networks for a while so usually stay with hosts when away and have hosted many travellers when based in London. House and pet sitting seemed an obvious evolution :)

I've had cats (nine) and dogs (five) and lived with a range of other animals from horses and geese to reptiles and mice. I've also cared for many different properties over the years, including a medieval inn in Cumbria, a 16-bedroom country house and grounds in Buckinghamshire and a Selby barge in London.

I am a gentle giant, quiet, reserved, non-drinker, non-smoker, out of shape after too long stuck inside caring for my mother, but still ambitious to realise my next project; attempting to cycle and sail to New Zealand. I have a lot of reading and writing and planning to do, so taking care of homes and animals and walking dogs whilst I'm doing that makes good sense.

I don't have a vehicle and my bikes are in storage at the moment so I'm reliant on public transport and lifts, but I always get to where I'm going so that's not a problem.

Unshackled and unburdened, I’m about to embark on the next phase of my life. Let me know if you think we might be able to help each other and I look forward to our paths crossing.

From the outset, I felt reassured that Mark would take good care of our cats. He built up good communication from the start to get to understand my cats' various foibles well in advance of the stay. We then stayed in touch, confirming travel arrangements etc before the house sit. I liked that he arrived a day or so before I left, so that we could manage the handover of the routine seamlessly. This really worked well, and the cats were already settled before I left. The house was in great ... MORE

Mark was a fantastic house guest. He treated our home with great care and evething was spotless when we returned. He built a rapid bond up with Ruby and understands dogs well she loved Mark so much she jumped into the car on his lap when he was heading off to the train station. Ruby was indulged a little while we were away a bit like having a grandparent take care of your children!

CLAIRE (Belper England, Oct 2024 - 1 week 5 nights)
It was such a pleasure to have Mark take care of my pets and home while I was away. His calm demeanour and his affection for the animals meant that I was able to enjoy my holiday knowing all was in safe hands. Highly recommend.

CECILE (Bournemouth England, Oct 2024 - 1 week 5 nights)
I feel blessed to have found Mark. I have had sitters before but they usually live in the shepherds hut or in their own van. Mark was the first stranger to stay in the house. I was apprehensive. He turned up to a flood chaos and took everything in his stride I came back to very happy animals. No drama at all from my perspective. One cat slept on his bed and in his luggage and followed him around the garden like a dog. ( very disloyal cat! ) He has a low carbon footprint and despite not ... MORE

mark was the best House sitter! He stayed in touch via WhatsApp messages and looked after the garden and chickens with such care. It took away our worries as we could see all was in good hands! I would certainly recommend Mark 100 percent!

MARY (Tewkesbury England, Sep 2024 - 1 week 5 nights)
Mark was a fabulous house and dog sitter. He is a very gentle and caring man and our two dogs soon bonded with him. Mark took the dogs for daily walks, looked after our plants in pots and did a couple of jobs around the garden. He was very tidy and took great care in every task. I would not hesitate to use him again and I can highly recommend him to any future clients.

ANNIE-T (Henley on Thames England, Sep 2024 - 2 weeks)
Its always difficult to leave home and the fur babies to someone new, but from the outset I was cofortable in Mark as the right choice for the housesit. He was great with communications, arrived early to get to know the kids while I was around and they instantly took to him. He is very personable, had some nice chats before I went away and on my return. He took good care of the house and the kids, my husky was worn out from all the adventures they had together. Many thanks for looking after ... MORE
